Necessity is the mother of invention. At their first company, co-founders Somen and Shaun struggled to make data-backed hiring decisions. Frustrated with the gut-feel approach, they knew there had to be a better way.

Ideal was born.

Ideal builds software to eliminate hiring mistakes. Ideal’s People Analytics technology uses data to instantly shortlist the best candidates for your company and increase workplace diversity. Ideal empowers Talent Acquisition to make more precise, accurate and efficient hiring decisions.

Our Team

Somen Mondal, CEO Ideal

Somen Mondal

CEO & Co-founder

Somen is a Canadian entrepreneur and the Co-Founder of Ideal. With a B.A.Sc. in Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto and a M.B.A from Queen's University, Somen served as Co-Founder and CEO of Field ID until it was acquired by Master Lock LLC in December 2012. Somen’s trophy case includes spots on the Profit Hot 50 and Deloitte Fast 50 Companies-to-Watch lists as well as the 2012 Ontario Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Outside the office, Somen is passionate about the start-up community and has a knack for discovering great restaurants around the world.

Shaun Ricci

COO & Co-founder

Shaun is the Co-Founder of Ideal, which is his second business after a successful acquisition of the previous start up, Field ID. After winning Entrepreneur of the Year in 2012 and recently marking 10 years since starting his first side project - he is finally comfortable answering "entrepreneur" to the dreaded, "So what do you do?" at cocktail parties. He thinks memorizing income statements is cool (although the team at Ideal is quick to remind him it’s not) but his real passion is watching customers use what we build every day and getting real value from the solution. When he is not working, he is convincing himself that the XBox One he recently bought was not for him, but for his 14 month old son.


Matt Sergeant


Matt previously headed up the Anti-Spam team at MessageLabs, where he created the world's first publicly available Bayesian Spam filter, the real-time signature system and overall infrastructure for global spam detection for millions of users worldwide. Since then Matt created the Haraka SMTP server, used by Craigslist and others to provide scalable email services to their users. In his spare time Matt is an avid climber, photographer, cyclist and snowboarder.

Jason Slaughter

VP of Product Management

As the VP of Product Management, Jason is responsible for the product strategy and roadmap at Ideal. He has worked with several start-up companies to build and deliver successful products to market, including DisplayLink (a Deloitte Fast 500 winner), TemboSocial, Swinguru, and others. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Jason has spent most of his career internationally, having lived in the UK, Taiwan, Belgium, and the US. Now back in Canada (for good?) he enjoys spending time with his two boys and re-discovering the best parts of Toronto.


Ji-A Min

Head Data Scientist

Ji-A’s experience as an employee assessment consultant and her research on workplace personality – featured in The Toronto Star and The Atlantic – makes her an ideal fit at Ideal. She holds a Master's in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Waterloo and is an Associate of the Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology. She’s a firm believer that data-driven decision-making leads to better outcomes. Off the clock, Ji-A enjoys cooking, lifting weights, and amusing friends with her freestyles.

Kayla Kozan

Director of Marketing

Kayla joined the Ideal team with an HBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business and an eye for disruptive ideas. Today she covers the startup world including the latest in Millennials in the workplace, growth marketing, predictive analytics and sales hiring. Her work has been featured on HubSpot, TechVibes, Verge Magazine, City Slicker and more. Outside of Ideal’s doors she is a big fan of potlucks and spontaneous road trips! She has also been known to moonlight as an aspiring stand-up comic.


Blair Kelly


Before joining the team, Blair was a front-end developer at one of Canada's highest rated marketing agencies. There he helped create responsive websites for some of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies and quickly became a team lead. He holds an Honours Degree in Communication Studies and Multimedia from McMaster University. For fun, Blair tinkers with his personal blog and brings his hardware prototypes to life: his Arduino work has been featured in MAKEzine and Kotaku.

Dwayne Lutchman

Account Executive

Dwayne is the first Sales Executive to join Ideal. Bringing over 4 years of previous sales experience to the table, along with a degree in Electrical Engineering from McGill University, he is a solution seller and problem solver. He is a constant learner and is always looking to improve his sales skills by attending conferences, meetups, or other networking events. Outside of work, Dwayne is interested in traveling, trying new restaurants, and enjoying the wonderful nightlife that Toronto has to offer.



Michael Hyatt

Executive Chairman, Co-Founder, BlueCat Networks

Michael Hyatt is the Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of BlueCat Networks and a recipient of the Top 40 Under 40™ Award. BlueCat is a four-time winner of “Deloitte’s Fast 50” and has received Gartner’s highest “Strong Positive” rating. Michael also co-founded Dyadem, a highly successful software company that was acquired by IHS (NYSE: IHS). Michael is a weekly business commentator on CBC Newsworld and has been featured on the cover of Canadian Business Magazine. He is also a finalist in Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award and an active participant and lender for a number of special charities.

Charissa Franklin

VP of Client Success, Reality Works Group

Charissa has more than 20 years of experience in high tech sales. She is most effective at designing strategies to accelerate customer acquisition and helping leaders effectively align and evolve their sales models. As an Inside Sales consultant, Charissa’s engagements have been with established companies such as Gemplus, Quest Software, Informatica, Cox Media, and Microsoft as well as startups such as Business Projects, Attributor, MCN Healthcare and NetLine. Responsibilities have included strategic planning, staffing, measurement definition, management development and interim management.
