1. Don’t Search on Company Time (or Your Company Computer!)

It may seem obvious but it can be very tempting to job hunt while you’re at your current job. Avoid this at all costs. No matter how stealthy you may believe you are, out of respect for your current employer, you should conduct your search on your off hours.

In doing so, you are also protecting your privacy and ensuring you won’t have management seeing you do the “quick switch” from your resume to Excel. This is one of the easiest ways to get caught and lose the trust of your current employer. Even if you “haaaaate” your job, you do not want to burn these bridges. To use their time, their computer, their internet, to find your next job is disrespectful and unethical. You can also kiss your references goodbye.

2. Use Private Job Marketplaces

Marketplaces are most easily understood as online “matchmaking” services for employers and job candidates.

Instead of having to complete an application for each job, marketplaces use a single profile to match candidates with any open role they are interested in. Employers on the other hand, are presented with candidates that are the best match for their requirements. With both employers and job seekers online, the biggest fear is obvious: what if your current employer sees you?

3. Check Your Notification Settings on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a powerful tool to use in your job search, but many people don’t know that they could be giving clear signals of job seeking just by using the service.

Depending on your settings, LinkedIn may post updates to your network on almost any functionality you use.

 

You do not want your current employer, manager or coworkers to see you “following” competitor’s company pages, updating your resume experience or changing your work history. Luckily, LinkedIn has an easy way to hide these actions while maintaining your visibility to recruiters and job-matching services.

  • You should also select who can see your connections. Follow best practice and choose “Only you” to maintain discretion. This option will prevent everyone, even your first degree connections, from seeing your other contacts.
  • Make sure that the primary email account you are using on LinkedIn is not your work email address.
  • If you’ve upgraded to LinkedIn’s premium Job Seeker account, switch off the Job Seeker briefcase badge and opt for the general premium “In” badge instead.
  • Do not post or change your headline to “seeking a position as ….” regardless of whether you are connected to your colleagues or not. A better alternative would be to let people know of your intent and generate leads by sending messages to your contacts privately.
  • LinkedIn groups can make networking easy. However, if you’re going to join a group for job seekers, make sure that it is a “closed” group so that your posts are only available to other members. You should also make sure that the group’s logo is not visible on your profile. To do this, go into Edit Profile mode and edit your group visibility settings.
  • If you’re going to ask people from your current company for recommendations, start with your colleagues who have left the company. It’s less suspicious when ex-colleagues provide recommendations for your current job.

4. Network Intelligently

Research has shown that up to 80%(!!) of today’s jobs are landed through networking. Which means if you’re looking for a job, you’ve got to get out there. Sometimes candidates think that networking will be a clue that they are job searching and avoid it all together. Clearly this is not the right strategy.

The key to networking intelligently is to go to a wide range of events and speak to a wide range of people. By attending multiple local events you are opening yourself up to a network of local hiring managers, directors, VPs and higher. Ultimately, you are meeting the decision makers.

One thing to remember is that it is even easier to get a job while you’re still employed elsewhere, so use this to your advantage.

Begin conversations by genuinely wanting to learn more about that person, not just blurting out that you’re on the job hunt. If you think the person is the appropriate contact, you can slowly work into the discussion that you are considering new opportunities. If you were unable to get to that point of the conversation you may want to send them a quick private email the following day. Not everyone you talk to will be able to get you hired, but someone might!
